Health Literacy Education for Youth to Tackle Disinformation and Improve Well-being

With this project, we will directly address the challenges related to online disinformation and the risks it poses to physical and psychological health and well-being. Poor health literacy, in fact, makes it difficult to find, understand, and use reliable information, depriving people of useful knowledge about their health and how and when to seek help. To address these challenges, we have identified the following objectives:
– increase the level of health literacy among young people and actively engage them against disinformation, also through peer learning practices;
– improve the digital and health literacy skills of young people, facilitators, educators, and activists by providing innovative resources and tools;
– promote cross-sectoral and intercultural collaboration among youth education policy professionals to foster health literacy among young people.
To achieve these objectives, we have planned a series of activities to be carried out during the 2025-2027 biennium. In the first part, we will focus on participatory data collection to assess the needs of young people, facilitators, and educators; organizing peer learning and co-creation events (VOYS – virtual open youth sandbox) to develop solutions against disinformation and improve health literacy; and holding a 3-day international event in Sofia, where facilitators and health experts will co-create learning content. This will give rise to a Health-Lit Learning Incubator (HeaLinc), a modular health literacy program available in 6 languages, with user and trainer guides, interactive skill workshops, and practical exercises. Finally, we will launch a social media awareness campaign to promote active youth engagement in health, especially in an era of rampant disinformation.
We expect significant outcomes, including:
– improved capabilities for youth facilitators, educators, and activists to integrate health literacy into activities with young people;
– a greater understanding of the importance of an effective communication strategy for working on health literacy with younger generations;
– increased awareness of the intersections between disinformation and health literacy, thanks to cultural exchanges and access to virtual spaces for continuous peer learning.
